The Story of the Lion »Franchement«
On June 10th, during the official opening days
of the Biennale, Georges Adéagbo transformed the Campo
dell’Arsenale with his installation inspiring thoughts
about mankind’s history, evolution and destiny. Unprotected
against the elements and villains, his piece might be the
only one to fulfill the curatorial theme, stipulated as dAPPERTutto
/ APERTO over ALL. Supported by Stephan Köhler, «Jointadventures»
and the Biennale’s logistics team, this risky project
was succesfully realized and even acknowlegded with an award.
Georges Adéagbo wrote five texts for this artists’
book, which has the same name as his one day installation.
The source of these short statements comes from his confrontation
with the challenge to compose a message to unfold in a unique
site for only a brief moment. Beginning his first writings
with the word Franchement, the book received this subtitle.
The texts appear in Georges’ handwriting in French along
with translations into English and German on seven folded
tryptich pages. These elements, which also host photos of
the installation taken by Stephan Köhler and Clemens-Tobias
Lange, can be freely arranged and reverberate the feeling
of the Oeuvre.
Total edition: 300 + 35 e.a. copies
While working on this book project with CTL,
Georges created another installation with objects bought and
collected in Hamburg. This spontaneous piece turned into a
book with the title «pour les collectionneurs des oeuvres
d’art, monument historique dell'allemagne»…
in an edition 15+4 copies. This element by element xeroxed
installation is available as an artists’ book in numbered
copies, together with the regular edition of the book, «The
Story of the Lion».

Die Installation Georges Adéagbos
(Benin), die nur einen Tag auf dem Campo dell’ Arsenale
zu sehen sein sollte, war eine der wenigen und in ihrer Konsequenz
vielleicht die einzige Arbeit auf der 48. Biennale di Venezia,
die dem Motto d’APERTutto / APERTO über all voll
gerecht wurde. Mit Wagnis zum Risiko in Regen und Hochwasser
unterzugehen, und un-geschützt auf dem öffentlichen
Platz, wurde die Installation von Stephan Köhler, »Jointadventures«
zusammen mit Georges Adéagbo und der Biennale geplant
und realisiert. Das Künstlerbuch wurde nach der Installation
benannt, mit dem französichen Wort »Franchement«
als Untertitel – Georges Adéagbo setzte es vor
die fünf Texte für das Buch: Es sind weder Beschreibungen
noch Erklärungen, sondern seine Auseinandersetzung mit
der Herausforderung, eine Aussage über einen historischen
Ort für die Dauer nur eines Tages zu schaffen. The Story
of the Lion Franchement Das Künstlerbuch Adéagbos
besteht aus sieben gefalteten Triptychen mit den Texten des
Künstlers und Fotografien. Die Texte erscheinen in Handschrift,
auf Französisch – außerdem in der deutschen
und englischen Übersetzung. Die Schwarzweiß Fotografien
der Installation sind von Stephan Köhler und von Clemens-Tobias
Lange. Gefaltet und geöffnet, gewendet oder gedreht:
kombiniert wie Worte in einem Satz können die Bögen
ein Gefühl von der Installation Adéagbos erzeugen.
